Swarovski Crystals
While there are a number of companies in the world manufacturing crystal beads, the leader in the industry is Swarovski. They have the very highest quality which distinguishes them from the rest. Their cutting and polishing techniques are superior, and they dominate the crystal bead market with their stunning colors.
Swarovski began over one hundred years ago when Daniel Swarovski and his three sons began production of crystals in the Alps of Austria. Using lead, glass, and other materials they were able to produce jewelry with a new machine that they patented which cut crystals with exacting precision.
Glass Crystals - Glass Crystals are a high quality crystal, but not as high of quality as Swarovski. At a glance these crystals are still brilliant. Although in a side by side comparison the Swarovski Crystal is clearer and may have more facets.
Semi Precious Glass - Glass is used to imitate gemstones. A great less expensive option to the real thing.
Lampwork Glass - Handmade artisan beads begin as individually colored glass rods that are melted in a torch by the artist. The torch reaches temperatures in excess of 2300 °F. As the glass turns molten it is wound onto a rod, called a mandrel, to form the hole of the bead. Each glass color is carefully layered. Handmade lampwork beads may take hours to create.
Foil lined beads are glass beads with a silver or gold look to them. A metal foil is encased in the glass and can either be throughout the bead or in flecks.
Sterling Silver - Sterling Silver has no nickel, so it is wearable by most segments of the population.
Rondelles - Rondelle describes the shape of the bead, usually a round disk but can also be square. Rondelles can also be studded with crystals.
Pearls - Natural freshwater pearls are textured and organic in shape. Cultured pearls are cultivated to be more round and smooth in finish. Imitation pearls are available in practically every color. To test if a pearl is real or not, rub against the teeth. The plates of nacre on real pearls grate against teeth. To care for pearls, wear often. Oils from the skin, air, light keep them bright. Pearls can be easily damaged by perfume and hairsprays, so put them on after spraying these products.
